Culture has always been a major issue in Linz – not only in the year in which it was the official City of Culture.

The following photo gallery can be navigated with the arrow keys (left, right).

The title of European Capital of Culture was held by Linz in 2009 and the city is indeed unique: Linz features Europe's most modern opera house, and a vital contemporary cultural scene as well as a thriving economy with world-class companies.

The historic roots of this marvellously green city are reflected in its well-preserved old town centre. However, Linz prefers to look ahead rather than back and loves to live in the here and now.

It is an exciting city – and a successful one as well. It has a long and eventful history which is reflected in the unique architecture of its historical town centre with a baroque main square that is particularly noteworthy. But in Linz nobody is dwelling on that subject: attention is focussed more on the present and the future.

In the middle of Europe

Not only is Linz situated in the middle of Europe – right in the centre of the integrated European region formed by the Danube and the Vltava river – but it can also be reached easily with all means of transport and from all directions.

There is a special relationship between Linz and the Danube. Linz is so close to the river that passing ships on Europe's largest waterway actually go right through the city centre. The fact that the Danube bends south here changing its direction led the Romans and Celts to name the city Lentia and Lentos respectively, which means “bend, curve”. It seems that the ability to change is the very essence of Linz.
