Description: The WolfgangseeSchifffahrt and the SchafbergBahn are currently on holiday and will be closed until 1 March.
Take a leisurely trip on this classic, olde worlde cog railway up the Schafberg mountain to a height of 1,783 metres.
The steepest steam cog railway in Austria has been ascending the Schafberg Mountain from St Wolfgang since 1893. It takes 35 minutes to reach the summit, covering an ascent of 1,190 metres over 5.85 kilometres. The historic cog railway’s steam engines are among the oldest working locomotives in the world, though a journey up the Schafberg mountain is an unforgettable experience even with the more modern steam engines. The view from the summit is the most magnificent in the world-famous Salzkammergut. On a clear day, there is a 360° panoramic view over the region’s glittering lakes, including Wolfgangsee, Irrsee, Mondsee and Fuschlsee, taking in foothills of the Alps and extending as far as Lake Chiemsee in Germany. All around, the mountains soar majestically, from the Höllengebirge range to the Dachstein Mountains to the Watzmann massif. The station for the Schafberg mountain railway is located on your right, just outside the centre of St Wolfgang in the direction of the village of Ried.
