Judas tree

Bad Hall, Oberösterreich , Österreich

Lat. name: Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Planted around 1950 (in the course of the incorporation of the Hadringer Grounds into the Kurpark)
Also Judas leaf tree or Japanese cake tree
Family: legumes
Home: Southern Europe and the Middle East
Use: ornamental plant
Legend and origin of name:
The name Judasbaum is based on the legend that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from such a tree (Mt 27,3-5 EU). According to an account of the Mediterranean region, the tree on this tree turned red with shame (cf. pink flowers). The round leaves, which form only during the blossoming, can be seen as the "silver pieces" that Judas received for his betrayal.
